FIFA, the global governing body of football, is poised to establish a task force to examine the ramifications of hosting competitive domestic matches abroad.

A recent legal agreement between FIFA and match organizer Relevant Sports in the USA, as described by Premier League CEO Richard Masters, has created an opening for the possibility of league matches occurring in foreign territories.

Although the Premier League currently asserts no intentions in this direction, despite having floated the controversial ’39th game’ concept during Richard Scudamore’s tenure, La Liga is already laying groundwork for overseas matches in the 2025-26 season.

La Liga has resurrected plans for international league fixtures, a move prompted by the cancellation of Barcelona’s 2019 match against Girona in Miami.

Previously, FIFA had been resistant to such proposals, fearing potential financial strains on domestic clubs. However, during its Council meeting in Bangkok, FIFA decided to establish a working group to gather more information, issue recommendations, and assess the impact on host nations.

The Council stipulated that any proposal must consider multiple factors, including ensuring adequate provision for fans of the participating teams to attend matches in the host nation.

Relevant Sports has been at the forefront of advocating for overseas matches, notably with their launch of the International Champions Cup for preseason fixtures. They also attempted to host an Ecuador League game in the USA in 2019, an effort ultimately thwarted by FIFA. Last summer, they organized the six-team Premier League summer series, featuring clubs like Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Brighton, Fulham, and Brentford.
