At approximately 10 pm on May 12th, a tragic incident unfolded as Denis Ongok, aged 23, and Godfrey Okello were traversing on a motorcycle from Abim Town Council to Alerek Town Council.

Regrettably, Ongok succumbed to his injuries, while Okello is currently in critical condition at Abim Hospital.

This incident marks the most recent occurrence in a string of wildlife-related events in Abim, provoking frustration and fear among the residents.

In January 2024, Amunyo Longoli narrowly escaped death after being assaulted by a buffalo, leaving him severely wounded.

Emmanuel Owona, the chairman of Alerek Subcounty, lamented the lack of action despite multiple reports to Kidepo National Park concerning the issue.

Residents are urging government intervention, emphasizing that these attacks not only claim human lives but also devastate crops, hindering access to gardens during the planting season.

The recent attack follows closely on the heels of another tragic elephant incident in Loyoro Subcounty, Kaabong District, which resulted in the loss of Walter Ngiro’s life.

The community demands decisive action from the Uganda Wildlife Authority to prevent further tragedies.

Paul Lokubal, a resident of Kaabong, emphasized, “We’ve endured enough loss of lives and livelihoods. It’s high time authorities take charge and shield us from these wild animals.”
