Uganda Honors Media Titans: Pioneers and Protectors of Press Freedom

Uganda celebrated World Press Freedom Day on May 3, and during the event, the Uganda Media Sector Working Group honored three individuals with the Journalism Lifetime Achievement award for their remarkable contributions to the country’s media development.

Firstly, Prof Goretti Linda Nassanga, a former journalist and now a respected professor, received recognition for her extensive work in journalism and communication research. She’s known for mentoring many professionals in the field and has published numerous articles covering various topics such as environment communication, media ethics, and peace journalism. She’s also been involved in consultancy work on national and international projects.

Secondly, Dr. James Rwehabura Tumusiime, who initially trained as an agriculturalist but later pursued a career in journalism, was honored for his significant impact on Uganda’s media landscape. He’s known for his influential cartoons and has worked as an editor for various publications. He’s also made his mark as a book publisher and media entrepreneur, founding several successful ventures including the New Vision newspaper and Fountain Publishers Ltd.

Lastly, Wafula Oguttu, the founder of Daily Monitor, was recognized for his efforts in upholding professionalism and defending media freedoms.

These individuals have not only excelled in their respective fields but have also played pivotal roles in shaping Uganda’s media and publishing sectors, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
