Buhweju County MP Francis Mwijukye narrowly escaped a harrowing assault on Sunday evening, sustaining severe injuries from machete-wielding assailants. Alongside him, seven others were also harmed in the incident, during which journalist Ms. Juliet Kyarisiima lost her equipment.

Thanks to the swift intervention of the police, Mwijukye and the targeted individuals were rescued from the attackers, as confirmed by Deo Atuhaire, the Buhweju district chairman. Currently receiving medical attention in Mbarara City, Mwijukye is reported to be out of immediate danger.

The attack occurred as Mwijukye and the group gathered to address concerns raised by parishioners of Rwanyamabaare Catholic Church in Nyakishana Subcounty. These concerns primarily revolved around individuals allegedly involved in land encroachment on church property, as conveyed to the legislator prior to the assault.

Earlier discussions on a radio program in Mbarara had outlined Mwijukye’s intentions to confront these alleged land grabbers, which seemingly provoked the premeditated attack.

Armed with machetes, sticks, and stones, the assailants targeted the congregation, leaving Mwijukye with severe head wounds. Journalist Kyarisiima reported significant damage to her electronic devices during the violent incident.

This disturbing event underscores the escalating issue of land grabbing not only in Ankole but also in various regions across the country.
