In a gripping showdown at The Graveyard, Makerere, Captain Hamza Kinyai emerged as the driving force behind Warriors’ pivotal 24-15 triumph over Rams during the opening round of the Nile Special Rugby Championship 2024 Relegation Playoffs on Sunday afternoon.

Initially grappling to find his rhythm, Kinyai faced early setbacks, with missed conversions, penalties, and drop goal attempts casting a shadow over Warriors’ prospects. However, the tides swiftly turned in the thirty-fifth minute when Kinyai’s precise penalty kick propelled Warriors into an 08-06 lead at halftime.

Fuelled by newfound momentum, Kinyai showcased unwavering accuracy post-break, notching up three penalties and a conversion following Ivan Rackara’s try, bolstering Warriors’ lead with flawless precision.

Yet, Warriors’ success was not solely attributed to Kinyai’s heroics; Gabriel Aredo and Isaac Yama’s adept kicks in open play added depth to Warriors’ offensive strategy, engaging in a captivating duel with Rams’ Dan Kisakye, Hossana Opileni, and Ryan Juuko.

Opileni, tasked with Rams’ kicking duties, achieved a modest success rate of forty percent, converting two penalties out of five attempts before being replaced by substitute Edrine Obbo in the second half. Mirroring Kinyai’s prowess, Obbo delivered an impeccable performance, narrowing Rams’ deficit with three successful penalties in the final twenty minutes.

As both teams’ kickers vied for supremacy, the upcoming rounds promise to be defined by their pivotal contributions in the battle for survival.
