A group gathered for a photo as Makerere University Management and the Mastercard Foundation extended their collaboration for the second phase of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, spanning from 2023 to 2034.

During this phase, Makerere University’s main campus in Kampala, Uganda, will offer 1000 scholarships over a decade, covering both undergraduate (Bachelor’s degree) and graduate (Master’s degree) programs. These scholarships target academically gifted individuals from Sub-Saharan Africa who are hindered by financial constraints from pursuing higher education.

Makerere University is excited to announce the availability of 95 undergraduate and 05 Master’s scholarship opportunities for nationals, refugees, internally displaced youth, and international students for the Academic Year 2024/2025, under the Private Sponsorship Scheme.

To qualify for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University’s main campus in the Academic Year 2024/2025, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

For Undergraduate Degree Programs:

  • Meet the admission requirements for Makerere University’s main campus under the Private Sponsorship Scheme.
  • Have completed Advanced level education (or equivalent) in an African country.
  • Demonstrate significant financial need.
  • Not hold any other scholarship, including Government Scholarships.
  • Not have completed any undergraduate studies.
  • Have a history of leadership and community service.
  • Be 28 years of age or younger at the application deadline, except for refugees, IDPs, and Students with Disabilities, who can be up to 32 years old.

For Master’s Academic Programs:

  • Qualify for admission at Makerere University’s main campus for the Master’s degree program.
  • Have completed a Bachelor’s degree in an African country.
  • Face significant financial hardship.
  • Show leadership potential and a record of community service.
  • Not hold any other scholarship.
  • Not have registered for or completed any other Master’s degree.
  • Be under 35 years of age at the time of applying, except for refugees and Students with Disabilities, who can be up to 40 years old.

Additionally, applicants must submit a motivational statement explaining their reasons for pursuing their chosen academic program and how it aligns with addressing societal challenges.

Application forms for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program scholarship can be obtained free of charge through physical copies from Makerere University or downloaded from their website. Online applications are also available through the designated portal.

The submission deadline for application forms is 5:00 pm on Friday, June 14, 2024, for the Academic Year 2024/25. Applicants should ensure all required documents are attached. It’s essential to note that 70% of scholarships are reserved for young women, 25% for Youth with Refugee status, and 10% for Youth with Disabilities. Any dishonesty or fraudulent behavior will result in disqualification, and only successful applicants will be notified.

Applications will remain open for Persons with Disabilities, Refugees, and Internally Displaced Persons for the Academic Year 2025/26, for those unable to meet the deadline for Academic Year 2024/25.
