The death toll from the bombing at the Lushagala site in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has risen to 35.

On May 3, two mortar shells struck the camp in the Mugunga district, located approximately 13-15 kilometers from Goma. The attack occurred amid intense clashes between the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) soldiers along with coalition forces in the region. Nine individuals lost their lives immediately, with 37 sustaining injuries.

Following the incident, both M23 and the DRC government/coalition exchanged accusations regarding the bombing. On Friday, Social Affairs Minister Modeste Mutinga Mutuishayi and Human Rights Minister Albert Fabrice Puela issued a statement, confirming the death toll at 35.

Mutushayi and Puela, along with a government delegation from Kinshasa, visited Goma city on Thursday to evaluate the security situation in North Kivu province. They strongly condemned the bombing and pledged the government’s utmost efforts to apprehend the perpetrators. Additionally, they announced that the deceased would be laid to rest on Saturday.

In March 2022, M23, under the leadership of Bertrand Bisimwa and General Sultan Makenga, instigated a conflict against the government. While the DR Congo government accuses Rwanda of backing M23, both Rwanda and M23 deny these allegations vehemently.
