Tanzanian President Orders Emergency Response to Cyclone Hidaya Devastation

Majaliwa conveyed the presidential directive during an emergency gathering to assess the aftermath of the tropical cyclone on Mafia Island in the coast region, Kilwa district in Lindi region, and Ifakara in Morogoro region, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office released in the capital Dodoma.

“The president has directed for immediate action, including the dispatch of relief supplies, to assist the victims of the tropical cyclone,” he remarked.

Joseph Mwasabeja, the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force commander for the Lindi region, reported on Sunday that flash floods, triggered by heavy rainfall from tropical cyclone Hidaya, which had weakened after hitting Mafia Island earlier on Saturday, had washed away four bridges.

Mwasabeja informed Xinhua that the highway was closed following the bridge collapses.

Mohamed Nyundo, the Kilwa district commissioner, disclosed that the floods had inundated numerous houses in seven villages, displacing many residents and causing extensive damage to hundreds of hectares of farmland.
