“Dr. Emily Maractho Assumes Leadership as ACME’s New Board Chair”

BUNGA – The African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) announced on Tuesday that Dr. Emily Maractho has been appointed as the new Chair of its Board of Directors, effective from May 4, 2024.

Dr. Maractho, who has been a board member since 2021, holds a doctorate in cultural and media studies and brings extensive expertise in scholarship and media development to her new role. She currently serves as an Associate Professor of Media and Development at the Uganda Christian University’s School of Journalism, Media, and Communication.

ACME’s Executive Director, Dr. George Lugalambi, expressed his excitement about Dr. Maractho’s appointment, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Maractho as the new Chair of our Board. Her significant experience in media development, combined with her distinguished academic background, positions her perfectly to lead ACME in the years ahead.”

Dr. Maractho’s commitment to media development is evident through her involvement in various industry boards and journalist capacity-building initiatives. She serves as Chair of the Editorial Committee at National Media Group Uganda and Vice Chairperson of the Uganda Media Women’s Association.

ACME’s board and staff express full confidence that under Dr. Maractho’s leadership, the organization will continue to advance media excellence and promote high-quality journalism across Africa.

Last year, Ms. Diana Angwech and Ms. Barbara Among were also appointed to ACME’s board. Ms. Angwech, a lawyer and former Vice-President of the Uganda Law Society, and Ms. Among, a corporate communications professional and long-time ACME subscriber, bring diverse expertise to the board.

Other members of ACME’s Board of Directors include Mr. Robby Muhumuza, a communications and management consultant; Mr. Paul Busharizi, a media consultant; Dr. Arthur Bainomugisha, Executive Director of Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE); Mr. Wairagala Wakabi, Executive Director of Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA); and Mr. Tabu Butagira, Managing Editor of Nation Media Group Uganda.

Dr. Maractho succeeds Ms. Susan Nsibirwa and Prof. Monica Chibita as ACME’s third Board Chair.
