As the sun rose over the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) in Kitante, Kampala, Mwenda’s skill on the course shone brightly. On this particular Saturday, the 30th of April 2024, he emerged victorious in the Stanbic Bank Monthly Mug of Mugs, carding a remarkable 66.

The Monthly Mug of Mugs wasn’t just another tournament; it was a battleground where golfers vied for glory, prizes, and crucial points to edge closer to the coveted Grand Mug of Mugs at the season’s end. Over 120 golfers gathered, their spirits high, eager to showcase their prowess on the meticulously manicured greens of UGC.

Yet, amidst the fierce competition, a poignant farewell hung in the air. General George Owino, the Kenyan High Commissioner to Uganda and a beloved figure in the golfing community, was bidding adieu after a tenure filled with camaraderie and sportsmanship.

Before the tournament reached its climax, tributes poured in for Gen. Owino. Paul Rukundo, the Club Captain, extolled Owino’s virtues, describing him as a paragon of sportsmanship and friendship. Owino’s unwavering dedication to fostering goodwill between Kenya and Uganda had left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.

Rukundo’s words echoed sentiments shared by all present, encapsulating the profound impact Owino had made during his tenure. As the ceremony drew to a close, Owino expressed gratitude for the warmth and hospitality he had received from Ugandans, both on and off the course.

Meanwhile, the tournament proceeded with fervour, drawing participants from near and far. Among them were golfers from Nakuru and a contingent from Dubai, including Owino’s son, Kevin Owino, adding an international flair to the competition.

In the end, it was Mwenda who emerged triumphant, his stellar performance securing him the coveted title of overall winner. The leader board bore testament to the day’s fierce battles, with names etched in both victory and valiant effort across various groups.

In Group A-Men, Paul Nuwagaba and Vincent Katutsi displayed exceptional skill, their performances resulting in a thrilling tie. Group B witnessed a standout performance from Sam Ssejjaaka, while Mark Namanya trailed closely behind. Nester Byamugisha and Collins Apuayo showcased their prowess in Group C, leaving an impression with their stellar play.

On the women’s front, Peace Kabasweka led the charge in Group A, her graceful strokes earning her admiration from all. Susan Tashobya and Jackie Kamunyu showcased their talent in Group B, adding a touch of finesse to the competition.

Amidst the club members, guests also left their mark, with John Nganga emerging victorious, his skill earning him accolades and admiration.

As the day drew to a close, amidst cheers and applause, the spirit of camaraderie prevailed. Despite the thrill of competition, it was the bonds forged on the greens of UGC that truly shone brightest.
