Kampala, Uganda – After a traffic incident captured attention on social media, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has issued an apology. A vehicle from the ODPP collided with a motorcycle at Kibuye Roundabout in Kampala. This motorcycle was carrying a woman and her child.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning. A security vehicle of the ODPP, with the registration UG 1059 J, hit a Boda Boda rider. This rider was transporting a woman and her school-aged child at the time.

Jacquelyn Okui, the spokesperson for the ODPP, quickly responded with a statement on Tuesday evening. She acknowledged the collision and offered an apology to the victims and the wider public. “We deeply regret the incident at Kibuye Roundabout. We are sorry for the trouble caused to the affected individuals and their families,” she said.

Moreover, Okui confirmed that the ODPP has contacted the victims. They are working with the police to ensure the victims receive necessary support and aid.

She also promised that the ODPP is taking steps to avoid such incidents in the future. “Ensuring the safety of all road users is our top priority. We are taking actions to maintain high safety standards in our vehicle operations,” Okui added.

Concerns Over Government Vehicle Use Increase

This recent event is part of a concerning trend involving government vehicle misuse in Uganda. Notably, a vehicle from the Kagadi District Local Government was involved in a fatal accident in February 2024. It struck and killed a 25-year-old amid protests over the state of roads in western Uganda. In another incident, in December 2023, a police patrol car driver turned himself in after his vehicle killed a soldier in Pader District.
