Forging Partnerships for Student Welfare: Makerere’s Call to Collaborate Between Guild President and University Council

Kampala, Uganda | Professor Henry Arinaitwe, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor overseeing Finance and Administration at Makerere University, underscored the pivotal role of collaboration between student leaders and the University Council in tackling student-related issues.

His remarks came during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Guild President, Vincent Lubega Nsamba, and other student leaders. Nsamba clinched victory in a fiercely contested race, garnering 2540 votes and succeeding Robert Maseruka as the 90th Guild President.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, Arinaitwe urged Nsamba to forge a close working relationship with the university administration and leverage the platform of the university council, where he will represent students, to address and resolve pertinent student concerns.

In his address, Nsamba delineated several challenges confronting students, including security issues in university halls, the eviction of small-scale enterprises, pending laboratory upgrades, and concerns regarding government allowances for law students. He pledged to prioritize addressing these issues.

Furthermore, Nsamba advocated for transparent discussions regarding the implications of the new Guild law 2022 on student welfare, expressing reservations about certain provisions perceived as encroaching on student rights. The statute, implemented in 2022, has faced criticism from students, particularly concerning its nonpartisan stance and the virtual nature of student elections.

Outgoing Guild President Robert Maseruka urged Nsamba to sustain advocacy for initiatives initiated by the previous leadership, such as course accreditation, timely issuance of transcripts, and the revision of the Guild statute.

The call for collaboration between student leaders and university authorities underscores an ongoing commitment to addressing student grievances and enhancing the overall university experience at Makerere.
