Julius Mucunguzi Takes Charge as Electoral Commission's New Spokesperson

In a major step toward enhancing its communication ahead of the critical 2026 general elections, Uganda’s Electoral Commission has appointed Mr. Julius Mucunguzi as its spokesperson. This move is part of the commission’s broader efforts to update its team in preparation for the electoral season.

Mucunguzi’s Journey to the Top

Mr. Mucunguzi, known for his deep expertise in journalism and communication, fills the vacancy left by Paul Bukenya. Bukenya acted in the role after Mr. Jotham Taremwa left in 2020. Mucunguzi stood out as the prime candidate for the Head of Public Relations role during last year’s selection process. Starting April 1, 2024, he will bring his wealth of experience to the forefront of the commission’s communication efforts.

With a rich background that includes being the African spokesperson for the Commonwealth Secretariat in London and a senior communications officer at World Vision Uganda, Mucunguzi is well-prepared for his new role. His earlier academic role teaching news writing and reporting at Makerere University further solidifies his credentials.

Mucunguzi’s appointment is a clear signal of the Electoral Commission’s dedication to improving its interaction with the public and stakeholders. As the 2026 elections approach, his role will be crucial in ensuring transparency and effective communication.
